The Western Australia Arms and Armour Society (Inc) was formed in 1973 by a group of enthusiasts with a common interest in providing a forum for collectors of old firearms and associated memorabilia in this state.
Today the society provides a meeting place for members to further their knowledge in areas of their own interests and also an opportunity to appreciate and understand the interests of other collectors in associated areas of collecting through guest speakers, visits to museums and so on.
Meetings are held monthly where we provide stimulation through guests speakers and competitions. Through these meetings we endeavour to spread knowledge across a wide range of collectable firearms and associated memorabilia, including uniforms, medals, accoutrements, and memorabilia associated with the settlement of Australia and the many wars we have been involved in.
The society has committee meetings where the serious business of running the organisation is conducted.
We have regular communication with other similar associations throughout Australasia. Our bi-monthly newsletter is posted to all Western Australian members and copies are sent to other clubs and societies throughout Australia. Their newsletters are also sent to us and help keep us abreast of happenings and possible changes to their legislation .
As a recognised firearms and associated memorabilia collecting society, we have been invited to lodge submissions on proposed changes to Western Australian legislation regarding the Firearms Act and Regulations.
Current legislation unfortunately still allows for the destruction of many valuable and irreplaceable firearms of historical and heritage value. A larger membership may influence future legislation in this area.
The Society conducts an Annual Militaria and Collectors Fair where members and collectors display their collections and many interesting items have been bought from the general public. Surplus items are also offered for sale or exchange and historians and enthusiasts can purchase books to complement libraries.
The general public is welcome at the fairs, hopefully to educate and stimulate their interests and join the Society.
We encourage inter-club activities with some of the shooting sports and members of all participating clubs benefit. We welcome family participation in these activities and in our social events.
The Western Australia Arms and Armour Society has been incorporated to protect members from legal action in the event such action be directed against the Society.
Every new member means strength in numbers and increases our impact on proposed legislation which may be detrimental to our collecting hobby.
